  • Read, Read & Read

Reading is the best source to open the thought process and mind of the brain. It leads to understanding the emotions that can’t be imagined in daily life. For example, if you are reading a storybook and it connects your emotions to real life. This process not only transports the emotions from the story into real-life consciousness but also provides a valuable indirect means of cultivating emotional intelligence.

  • Listening & Practising Empathy

Listening is another best aspect of understanding emotions. It involves actively participating in conversations, expressing emotions, and demonstrating empathy in communication. By attentively listening to discussions, practising the articulation of feelings, and exhibiting empathy in expression, one can create a powerful synergy.

  • Active Listening

It is the sub-part of listening where people pay attention to the words, thoughts and voice. To remember things actively, people make notes and jot down important points. In active listening, people respond rather than react. For example, when an individual falls ill, the initial approach is to inquire about their well-being. This approach encourages a responsive engagement, allowing the individual to provide information willingly, rather than prompting a reactive response.

  • Talking To A Coach Or Counsellor

Seeking help at the time of negative emotions would help in managing the emotions intelligently. Asking for help from family members, colleagues and friends will assess the emotions neutrally and give a new thought process of the situation. 

  • Self Awareness

Self-awareness helps in understanding the emotions correctly and the actions involved in the emotions. In this, the people pay attention to their feelings. For example, at times of illness, individuals tend to prioritize their health and well-being over professional responsibilities, shifting their focus towards managing suffering rather than concentrating on work-related tasks.

Take Stock of Emotional Strengths & Weakness

Understanding emotional strengths and weaknesses helps in managing emotions in an individual. Emotion strengths can be achieved by: 

  • Maintaining Calmness

Calmness is the emotion that can slow hypertension in the mind and release positive emotions. Whether meeting clients, employees, colleagues, friends, or family members, calmness in emotions leads to better relations and positive choice of words. 

  •  Forgiving 

Forgiving emotions ensures to cool down the emotion of anger and gives flexibility to the emotions. For example, if your client reaches a meeting half an hour late but you have good terms with the client, then there would be flexibility of emotions within them. 

  • Being Friendly 

Being rigid and working by the rule book would not be an easy task. This friendly behaviour ensures better relationships with colleagues and team members. 

Emotionally weak people trust others easily and can also experience emotional breakdowns. Always ask three questions if you are emotionally drained: 

  • Who are you meeting? 
  • Emotions experienced right before a meeting- angry or dissatisfied?
  • Did you forget all negative emotions before a meeting?
